Supervisor – Life Support System and Maintenance

JOB PURPOSE
Responsible for the maintenance and operation of the fully automated Main Tank Life Support System and manage all non-automated LSS components of the National Aquarium. LSS Supervisor is also responsible for the building maintenance in all aquarium designated areas of the Mall facility.

NATURE & SCOPE
The job holder will be responsible for the daily care of all the animals within the Aquarium Specific focus will be on the Life Support Systems. The Job holder will be responsible for the supervision of all maintenance staff. It is their responsibility to ensure all mechanical systems within the Aquarium are maintained and operational.

DIMENSIONS
To monitor, assess and rectify issues with Life Support Systems to ensure optimal conditions for animal exhibits.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
• Manage all automated LSS components of the main tank aquarium. To monitor water levels and keep LSS components within their design specification.
• Assists the LSS Manager in staff scheduling and time keeping of staff activities such as maintenance and cleaning which may have an impact on LSS.
• Assists the Curator / LSS Managers in the implementation of written LSS standards and protocols for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for water quality, operational efficiency, cleanliness, display attractiveness and animal health.
• With the Curators / LSS Managers approval make improvements or modifications to systems to meet particular species needs or to improve general exhibit quality.
• To conduct preventative maintenance on all LSS components in order to ensure uninterrupted operation of the aquarium long term.
• To establish a list of emergency protocols for dealing with long term and short term potential hazards to exhibits. For example power failure.
• Manage all non-automated LSS components of the National Aquarium exhibits. Because there are no time keeping devices on these exhibits all cleaning and maintenance must be systematic and recorded.
• To manage all warranty and supplier servicing agreements for LSS components and auxiliary systems
• To manage all building maintenance including M&E and physical structures within aquarium areas.
• Keep all building fixtures and fittings in world class condition.
• Manage all LSS lighting and area lighting and replace lamps where required. Determine if the aquarium electrical use is operating by the most cost effective means. Make suggestions where energy consumption can be improved without the sacrifice of the product.
• Ensures that all back of house areas deemed “plant rooms” are kept clean and free of clutter and LSS components of clean appearance.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE (COMPETENCIES REQUIRED)
• Experience with working with aquatic systems in an aquarium, zoo, aquaculture facility or related field.
• Experience with maintaining aquariums and knowledge of water chemistry.
• Knowledge of the physical and chemical dynamics of biological systems
• Sound understanding of life support systems including mechanical, biological and chemical filtration and sterilization techniques.
• Experience in management of staff or the development and undertaking of research/monitoring programs
• Four year degree in biological science or equivalent work experience
• Experience with, and knowledge of, the biology and behavior for any or all of the following: Fish, invertebrates, amphibians, birds, reptiles, marine / terrestrial mammals.
• Computer competency vital – particularly MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases.
• Experience in Building maintenance. (Painting, Pipe fitting, Fixture Installation, Fire Fighting, Drainage, Toilets)
• Ability to maintain record keeping systems.

Life Support System and Maintenance Technician

JOB PURPOSE
Maintains responsibility for assisting the maintenance and operation of all life support systems. This position is also responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of the non-automated Life Support Systems in the National Aquarium exhibits.
LSS technician is also responsible for assisting with the building maintenance as required.

NATURE & SCOPE
The job holder will be responsible for the daily care of all the animals within the Aquarium. Specific focus will be on the Life Support System and maintenance.

DIMENSIONS
Ensure that critical life support systems are properly maintained in a manner that supports optimal conditions for animal health.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
• Assist with the management all automated LSS components of the main tank aquarium. To monitor water levels and keep LSS components within their design specification.

Animal Trainer

JOB PURPOSE
The Animal Trainer is responsible for the physical and psychological well-being of the animals within The National Aquarium. Animal Trainers need to ensure that the animals have the right environment to perform their natural behaviors.

Aquarist

JOB PURPOSE
The Aquarist is responsible for being part of a core team for the maintenance and husbandry of living exhibits and provides assistance with a range of activities associated with The National Aquarium. Aquarists are advanced fish keepers with knowledge of marine and freshwater aquariums.

Dive Manager

JOB PURPOSE
Responsible for dive operations and safety within The National Aquarium Exhibits. The acquisition, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of aquatic and terrestrial organisms at The National Aquarium. Responsible for managing and operating Customer Dive Experiences.

NATURE & SCOPE
The job holder will be responsible for the daily diving activities, which includes schedules and equipment oversight. Responsible for the dive shows and presentations.

DIMENSIONS
Undertake daily diving duties to ensure optimal conditions for animals within the Aquarium and customer experiences.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
• Follow established written standards and protocols for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for water quality, operational efficiency, cleanliness and animal health.
• Manages daily activities related to cleaning, maintenance, feeding and other husbandry activities required on a day-to-day basis, including routine checking of all aquarium exhibits and LSS areas assigned.
• Report issues and assist in the development of actions to rectify any faulty equipment or problems, in particular identify animal health or water quality problems and report to supervisor, medical and water quality staff and assist to develop a plan of action to handle the care and treatment of affected animals.
• Develops and implements health and safety protocols within diving activities.
• Develops and trains diver team.
• Assist to maintain all curatorial areas so they are safe and clean.
• Assists the Supervisor in maintaining an inventory of supplies, equipment and animal food items necessary for the daily care of the collection.
• Work as a team with Guest Services and Front of House to provide a quality experience for guests and a safe and comfortable work environment for staff through continuous maintenance and improvement of visitor and behind-the-scenes spaces.
• Assist in ongoing aquarium research projects, both internally and externally.
• Diving as required on a day to day basis, following company diving safety protocols and procedures and performing tasks to schedule and to an appropriate quality.
• Maintaining documentation and databases for diving, livestock (animal health and behavior, acquisitions and mortality), water quality, etc, where asked.

• Experience in public diving programs desirable

Diver

JOB PURPOSE
Responsible for assisting in dive operations in the exhibits, the acquisition, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of aquatic and terrestrial organisms at The National Aquarium.

Food preparation technician

JOB PURPOSE
To provide food preparation support to the National Aquarium.

NATURE & SCOPE
The job holder will be responsible for ensuring that all food required for The National Aquarium is prepared and organized on a daily basis.

DIMENSIONS
Interacts with curatorial team to ensure specific animal diet is achieved on a daily basis.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
• All animal food for the Aquarium is prepared on a daily basis in time for daily operations and shows.
• All food preparation areas are well maintained and all equipment failures are reported.
• All food preparation areas are kept clean and tidy at all times.
• Ensure that fish feeding containers are filled on a daily basis in time for daily operations.
• All food used is recorded and records passed onto the exhibits supervisor.
• The fridge and freezer are maintained in an orderly manner.
• Performs and follows food inventory and ensures supply reporting to the |Senior Aquarist
• Receiving of food stocks from the supplier.
• Follows Health and Safety Protocols.
• Ensures correct daily record keeping.
• Ensure all rubbish is removed on a daily basis.

JOB PURPOSE

Senior Aquarist

JOB PURPOSE
The Senior Aquarist is responsible for the production and maintenance of high quality living exhibits and provides assistance with a range of activities associated with The National Aquarium exhibit. The primary role of the Senior Aquarist is to supervise and participate in the day-to-day maintenance of living exhibits and support aquariums and systems, routine SCUBA diving duties. The Senior Aquarist plays as an important role in guiding and training the aquarist team in the development and implementation of new exhibits and techniques.

NATURE & SCOPE
The job holder will be responsible for the daily care of all the animals within the Aquarium

DIMENSIONS
Ensure that the highest standards of animals care are maintained across all exhibits.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY

• Performs daily monitoring and assessment of aquatic animals, their health, treatment and management to ensure the highest level of quality throughout the aquarium facility.
• Acts as a lead and resource to aquarists and junior aquarists.
• Works with the Aquarist supervisor to achieve company and personal goals for the aquarist team.
• Diving as required on a day to day basis and perform maintenance and feedings as required.
• Ensure staffs are trained in accordance with the Working Instructions and Husbandry Manuals.
• Handle live animal shipments and acclimation processes
• Ensure quarantine procedures are kept to a high standard
• Ensure that Health and Safety protocols are followed at all times.
• Assume Supervisorial responsibilities for the Husbandry Department by increasing support while Supervisor is absent or dealing with consultancy and development projects.
• Assist the Curatorial team in the development of new exhibits
• Take responsibility for activities relating to exhibits and husbandry.

• Daily monitor animal feedings and adjust accordingly.

• Will ensure that all areas of responsibility are reviewed and subjected to a process of continuous improvement.

• A higher school degree in Biology, preferably Marine Biology or Oceanography or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience working within an aquarium or similar facility
• SCUBA certification from a recognized training agency
• Computer skills is desirable
• Experience in project development and commissioning are an advantage
• Driver’s license is an advantage
• Experience with terrestrial and amphibious animals is an advantage
• Experience with live corals and Jellyfish is an advantage
• Experience with live food culture is an advantage

Veterinarian

JOB PURPOSE
This position would serve as the primary veterinarian for The National Aquarium, overseeing all aspects of animal health for the entire living collection of aquatic and terrestrial animals, including preventative care, diagnostic services and treatments. Directly responsible for managing animal diagnosis and prognosis. Researches, establishes and maintains humane, respectful and professional animal health practices.

NATURE & SCOPE
The job holder will be responsible for the daily veterinarian duties for all animals within the National Aquarium

DIMENSIONS
Ensure that the highest standards of animals care are maintained across all exhibits.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
• Carries out the primary responsibilities of medical care of the animal collection including all species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates housed at the National Aquarium.
• Works closely with regional veterinarian who will make periodic visits.
• Researches and investigates problems with clinical laboratory procedures and makes or recommends modifications and corrections as appropriate.
• Performs cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment, and hospital/procedure areas.
• Dispenses and administers medications, treatments and vaccinations to animals as prescribed by the veterinarian.
• Orients, mentors and teaches clinical diagnostic, treatment and laboratory methods, procedures and techniques to staff as appropriate.
• Supervises, evaluates and develops staff and ensures effective and ongoing medical training of staff.
• Manages inventory for the laboratory and medical areas.
• Maintains personal and professional development.
• Maintains confidentiality of information received at all times.
